The Big 5 of ELD
Learning Activity
Below is an overview of the Big 5 of ELD. Read the notes below and reflect on your learning.
ELD standards are utilized in both integrated and designated instruction and disciplinary literacy is approached through comprehensive ELD (integrated and designated). The new standards are designed to work in tandem with content standards. In integrated ELD the focus is on the content standards in tandem with the ELD standards. In designated ELD, the focus is on the ELD standards connected to content standards. .
One important focus area in ELD instruction is creating purposeful opportunities for students to engage in meaningful interactions to support meaning making, effective expression, language development, and content knowledge. Another important ELD focus is explicitly teaching students how English works through text analysis, writing instruction, and speaking and listening opportunities.
Not all English learners have the same linguistic needs. Instruction for English learners should be targeted and aligned with students language proficiencies.
ELD should occur daily. Time and model is a district decision. See CDE Frequently asked questions for additional information. http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/el/er/documents/elsdelfaqs.doc
Creating a supportive learning environment is critical for developing language..
