SEL Competencies
Fostering Social and Emotional Skills for Student Success
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is essential for student success in school and life. SEL involves developing critical skills like self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship building, and responsible decision making. Extensive research shows that integrating SEL in schools promotes positive outcomes including improved academic performance, behavior, and mental health.
On our professional development platform Alludo, educators can access training on the core SEL competencies identified by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL). The five key competencies are:
- Self-Awareness: Accurately recognizing emotions, thoughts, values, strengths, and limitations
- Self-Management: Effectively regulating emotions, controlling impulses, setting goals
- Social Awareness: Understanding social norms, taking others’ perspectives
- Relationship Skills: Communicating clearly, cooperating, resisting inappropriate social pressure
- Responsible Decision Making: Making constructive choices about behavior and interactions
In addition to the CASEL competencies, Alludo covers three supplementary SEL skills measured by the Devereux Students Strengths Assessment (DESSA): optimistic thinking, personal responsibility, and goal-directed behavior.
Our training equips educators to systematically promote students’ social-emotional growth alongside their academic progress. With in-depth courses on applying SEL principles across grade levels and subject areas, educators can confidently integrate SEL into everyday teaching.
