Google Contacts is now it's own app and is not directly integrated into Gmail. Contacts helps you keep track of everyone you communicate with: whether you send messages regularly or have only e-mailed once or twice. You can organize your contacts into user groups, edit and delete contacts, or import your contacts from another program or platform. Creating user groups is useful for quickly sending out mass e-mails, or sharing documents with a group.
