PBIS: What is Tier 1 PBIS?
Learning Activity
Tier 1 of PBIS provides interventions and supports school-wide that aim to help all students universally and acts as a foundation for tiers 2 and 3. Within this tier, students learn the 3-5 behavior expectations (supported by rules, routines, and physical arrangements) that were set for them in order to prevent the occurrence of the problematic behavior that has been targeted for change. Additionally, students demonstrating good behavior are regularly recognized and rewarded by the staff.
While the majority of the students respond to Tier 1 strategies, the information gathered via data collection will help staff determine whether the level of interventions and support a student receives should be elevated to Tier 2 or 3. Establishing and consistently practicing Tier 1 practices helps reduce the number of students requiring the more intense support of higher tiers. The support this tier provides is considered effective if at least 80% of students are meeting the academic and behavioral benchmarks set.
