PBIS: Tier 2 Implementation
Learning Activity
Tier 1 are critical foundations for effective implementation of Tier 2 because the success of the secondary tier relies on the systems and practices that have been effectively implemented schoolwide in Tier 1. This being the case, it is important for a school’s PBIS leadership team to evaluate their level of Tier 1 implementation against the Tier 2 Readiness Checklist prior to proceeding with Tier 2 implementation.
A school’s PBIS leadership team will also seek out staff commitment prior to the development of Tier 2 systems and supports to ensure that their perspectives are heard, potential issues and concerns aren’t left unaddressed, and the implementation isn’t ultimately restricted.
Implementing Tier 2 Interventions & Supports
Decisions to implement Tier 2 interventions are based on records of student behavior compiled by classroom teachers or other professionals. The decision to use Tier 2 support is typically made by the school's planning team and behavior support team. Tier 2 support is most effective when approached as a collaborative (rather than expert-driven) process. Assessment and intervention should involve support teams should comprise people who have specific expertise in intervention programs being considered as well as people who know the student best, have a vested interest in positive outcomes, represent the range of environments in which the student participates, and have access to resources needed for support.
