PBIS: What is Tier 2 PBIS?
Learning Activity
While Tier 1 of PBIS provides proactive support and interventions to all students to prevent academic and behavioral difficulties, Tier 2 of aims to reduce current incidents of problem behavior by students who aren't responding to Tier 1 support and students identified as "at-risk" for engaging in behavior problems. These students are provided with behavior support strategies in addition to the universal supports.
Due to the number of students who could benefit from secondary support (roughly 15-20% of the students), individualized behavior supports are not feasible for all of these students. Rather, these interventions (called targeted interventions because they focus on a specific, targeted skill or deficit) are developed for a group-based format. Tier 2 targeted interventions are implemented for a short period of time (6-8 weeks), and are appropriate for students who exhibit problem behaviors across multiple settings. Common Tier 2 targeted interventions include Check-In/Check-Out, Targeted Social Skills Groups, and Targeted Academic Supports. Tier 2 targeted intervention are:
- Continuously availability;
- \Readily accessible Rapid access;
- Require very low effort by teachers;
- Consistent with schoolwide expectations;
- Implemented by all staff/faculty in a school;
- Flexible and based on functional assessment; and
- Involve the continuous monitoring of student behavior for decision-making.
