Check-in check-out is one of the most widely used Tier 2 interventions utilized to improve student behavior and work habits. It is a great way to talk to students about being mindful of the expectations and to work on specific behaviors that need improving. How do we use check-in check-out in a distance learning environment? This new learning environment allows educators to connect with students and parents in unique ways that were not available previously. Using platforms like Zoom or Google Meet to connect with students for a couple of minutes regarding behavior is powerful and can improve student focus, motivation, and behavior.

Activity:  Select one of your students to zoom with and to do a check-in check-out. Design a short behavior progress sheet/card of the expectations that you would like that student to work on. During your check-in check-out time, discuss the expectations and progress with the student. Write a 4-5 sentence reflection on how the interaction went:

What behaviors/expectations did you discuss? How was it received by the student? When reviewing behavior and/or work habits, how did he/she do in meeting the expectations for the day? What are your overall impressions of using check-in check-out for distance learning?
