5E's: Explain
Learning Activity
Example of During the 'Explain' phase of the 5Es model, students are tasked with describing and interpreting their observations. They have opportunities to verbalize their conceptual understanding or to demonstrate new skills or behaviors. The teacher takes on a more prominent role as it's during this phase that direct instruction, clarification of misconceptions, introduction of formal terms, and explanations for content specific knowledge (e.g., concepts, processes, skills, or behaviors) is provided. Further, the teacher will check for misunderstandings to observe what objectives need to be clarified or taught.
Teachers can encourage students to communicate their understanding of a topic by using activities and tools such as Web Quest, writing laboratory reports, delivering a presentation, completing a KWHL chart, and NASA eClips™ to help summarize a topic.
