Although the 5E model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, and Evaluate) is viewed as a linear process, it is intended to be a fluid, support one another in an iterative spiral. For example, the Explore & Explain phases are repeated multiple times as new aspects of the phenomenon are being investigated (Simani, 2017); teachers can use ongoing assessment to measure student learning (Evaluate phase) as students progress through a lesson spanning multiple days; etc.
